Robi Szalay is a visual artist from Western Australia with a love of contrasted textures. She views her work as abstract drawings in stitch, primarily using free motion machine embroidery, deconstruction and print. Known for creating contemporary lace and distressed cloth, Robi is drawn to the ephemeral beauty in the imperfections of the handmade. Through ritualistic endeavour, she strives to evoke a sense of the visceral while exploring the mind/body connection and responding to issues of personal identity, transcendence and the language of materials. Robi’s latest fashion accessories are one-off originals featuring her signature technique of free motion machine embroidery.
